Why We Love Minerals at Rachel Doherty Nutritionist
Minerals are like spark plugs! They are essential for many processes in the body. Minerals work together, so they need to be in balance with each other. When certain minerals are too high or too low, it may contribute to a range of symptoms and disrupt how the body functions.
If something doesn’t quite feel right, maybe it is time to look at your minerals.
Common Mineral Imbalances We See in Clinic
Here are some of the patterns we often see on Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA):
High Calcium
Calcium needs to go into the bones, not the soft tissues. High tissue calcium is often linked with long-term stress, and I find it shows up in many older women. It is associated with a slower metabolism and may be linked with joint and muscle pain, fatigue, blood sugar issues and thyroid issues.
Low Copper
Often copper is bio-unavailable, meaning it is floating around the body but not being used well. This may contribute to mood and anxiety concerns, low energy and hormone changes. Many women have been on the pill for a long time, and this may affect copper levels.
High Iron
High iron may be linked with inflammation or infection, and it may affect oestrogen levels and liver function. If a blood test shows high iron, it’s important to talk it through with your GP as well.
